The Walking Dead Cake
We were finally asked to create a Walking Dead Cake! Couldn't of been more excited about it!! I'll have to admit, the wife and I are a little behind on the series on account of us being so busy. But, that's a problem I don't mind having... besides, that's what Netflix and Playstation Vue is for right?
Ok, so let's get started. This cake was for 30 people but we decided to make it a little bit bigger since it was for a longtime friend and hopefully colleague. She owns OSH Photography and does fantastic work here in Arizona. I thought it would be best if we used buttercream to frost the cake and not smooth it out completely to give it more of a gruesome look. I printed out the logo for the title and cut it out onto fondant. Time consuming but necessary. The better the stencil the better the finished product so take your time with the details. Here's the template. You may have to enlarge the image depending on your cake size.
Negan's bat took longer than expected but only because of the barbed wire. I sculpted the bulk of the bat out of rice cereal treats, frosted it with buttercream to fill in all the divots and covered it with brown fondant. I made some wood grain marks with a sculpting tool. I used an extruder to make the barbed wire and attached each one with some piping gel.
Now for the best part! THE BLOOD!!
Our customer didn't want chocolate, otherwise I would have used a mirror glaze recipe. Good thing I didn't because I really like how the blood came out. I mixed a packet of non flavored gelatin, sugar, and water over medium high heat. Stirred until dissolved then let it boil for a minute. I took it off the stove and let it cool until I got the desired thickness. I used a small plunger/dropper that came with our Gummy Bear Molds and let it drip down the sides. I repeated the process a few times and each time the mixture thickened more which was good because it gave the blood a clotted look. I mixed tulip red and maroon to get the right deep oxygen rich blood color!
First the bat was placed on top of the cake then came the blood and last the logo. And that's it!
Hope you enjoyed!
Do you see anything peculiar about this photo? Kind of an eerie presence... Nah...
